Useful Cloth Nappy links

Added 4th of January 2008

I decided to put together some links to sites that I have found useful.

Buying Cotton Nappies New

I bought many of my cloth nappies second hand, of course, but here are some sites I liked:

www.thenappylady.co.uk
I got some of my nappies from here. They offer an advice service, which is not only free, but gives a 5% discount on purchases. My advisor was very helpful, and answered numerous emails from me!:

I also bought a few nappies from here. I have phoned up the owner to ask for advice, and she was very nice and helpful. Some nappies have a 'trial price', so you can buy one at a discounted price to try. Free delivery over £20:

I also found this site good. Free delivery over £50

Instructions for using and caring for real nappies

This illustrates shows how to fold terry squares clearly. I recommend the envelope fold (also known as the jo fold):

A WAHM site specialising in making nappies and clothes from recycled materials. Sells a lot of wool wraps. This page gives useful information about how to care for wool wraps and how to waterproof using lanolin, (including using Lansinoh nipple cream to do the same job!):

A detailed "how to" instructions for a variety of different nappies and nappy products:

Tips on washing and caring for many cloth shaped nappies including, how to soak, dry pail etc. Also contains a list of Manufacturers's washing recommendations including temperatures and tumble drying instructions:

Making your own nappies, wraps and accessories

I really wish I was talented in this area! Here are a few site I have stumbled across. Some of them I have tried, others not.

Make your own woolly wraps using a recycled jumper. I have tried this and it was easy. My first attempt came out too small in the rise, enough though I thought it would be huge. Make sure you choose a really soft jumper of at least 80% wool:

Free knitting patterns for creating a wool wrap (I haven't personally tried any of these- would be interested to know if they work!):

Here are a few recipes for making wipe solutions (used with reusable wipes):

Sanitary Protection

This is an interesting site about nappies in general, but I found these reviews on cloth menstral pads really valuable:
http://familyfrench.co.uk/nappies/clothformum.htm

If you ever wanted to try a Mooncup, but were unsure about the idea, this site offers a money back guaranty. If you don't like it after 3 months, send it back and get a refund! (I bought my Popolini Cotton Menstrual pads from this site- excellent value for money, a great way to see if cloth menstrual pad are for you!):

This tell you how to wash cloth menstrual products as well as how to make your own cloth san pro (it even supplies templates!):

Recycling

This is a grassroots and entirely nonprofit movement of people who are giving (& getting) stuff for free in their own towns. It's all about reuse and keeping good stuff out of landfills. A great way of de-cluttering! There are often baby items available and, very occasionally, real used nappies. A good place to donate your used nappies to:

Please also let me know if any of these links no longer work. Hope you find these useful :)
