Using Terry Squares at Night.

Added 23rd of January 2008

"Sam's Loincloth night nappy terry fold!"

I have always loved using terry squares during the day, but couldn't really find a way to make them work at night. Many people just fold as usual, but just place one on top of the other. I have found this really too bulky, and couldn't fasten them up easily. Poor Sam couldn't walk in this, and it didn't look very comfortable.
Anyway, I usually use the envelope fold (or jo fold) and I played around and came up with a night time fold so suit Sam. I think it will work well for any baby that wets towards the front. Sam's nappy is literally dry at the back in the morning, so he needs lots of boosting at the front, and as little bulk at the back as possible. This fold lasts him at least 13 hours, much better than any disposables I have tried!

  1. Start the envelope fold as usual, folding the four corners into the middle.
  2. Make a long booster with the second terry. My terries are quite thick, so sometimes I use one of my thinner squares or a cheap IKEA hand towel (it doesn't need to be a square shape). This keeps the bulk down, but isn't quite so absorbent. Whatever towel I use, I fold it in half, then thirds, giving a booster that is six layers thick. Place one end in about the middle of the part folded nappy. Too far back, and you may find the finished nappy too bulky.
  3. Finish the envelope fold.
  4. Add a liner. Sometimes I use a fleece topped booster.
  5. Fasten the nappy using a nippa. The terry booster will be hanging out of the top.
  6. The booster outside the nappy can then either be folded in half again, and secured with another nippa, or left and just placed down. I think it looks a little like loincloth!

The wrap should hold this in place. I use a wool wrap which is not as tight fitting as my PUL ones, so I just put a nappy pin to keep the booster in place, it can move around a bit.

Any comments, or new terry folds, contact me!   If you are not familiar with the envelope fold, it is clearly explained here. You could of course adapt “Sam's Loincloth night nappy terry fold” to use with any of the folds here.
